Alzheimer’s Prevention
The day may come when science and medicine make Alzheimer’s disease a thing of the past. But for the time being, taking steps toward prevention based on the information we have is the best we can do.
According to experts, in the majority of cases Alzheimer’s develops from a combination of complex interactions including genetics, age, environment, lifestyle, and comorbidities. While some of these cannot be modified, conditions such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, and lack of exercise believed to impact the onset of Alzheimer’s can be altered, so early detection and action is crucial.
Healthy Eating
Healthy eating is always a good idea, and some studies show it can help protect the brain. This includes limiting refined sugar and saturated fats and using healthy fats such as olive oil and nuts. Making fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and lean meats, nonfat or low fat dairy products, and whole grains a mainstay of the diet are all optimal choices.
